EPISODE SUMMARY

This week, we’re going to explore the one fruit of the Spirit that a few of us may have been tempted to skip: Patience.

Patience creates a beautiful space where we can listen carefully and pray properly. When patience rises up within us, we push away the negatives as we experience the freedom to learn and grow in Christ.

Patience Changes Our Perspective

I remember one of my mentors saying to me, “Whatever you do Graham, never, never, ever ask the  Lord for patience!” Many of you may feel the same way. I believed for a long time that patience was to be avoided in favor of something better, like joy or peace. Until I was involved in a long and difficult situation and my biggest problem was that I could not convert my huge frustration into a lasting peace or joy.

That was when I set time aside to study patience as God saw it.  What I  discovered was so profound that it changed my experience of God in tough life situations.

Patience Empowers Us To Learn

In Psalm 40:1, David wrote, “I waited patiently for the Lord and He inclined to me and heard my cry.” I love this particular word, where it says that God  “inclined” to me.  It means to turn aside and stretch out a hand. It’s a figure of God’s active, sovereign involvement in our lives and in our circumstances.

Without patience, there is often no learning taking place with the Lord. Circumstances can be prolonged because our negative reaction exacerbates the situation.

Patience creates space for us to draw breath and allow the inner man to rise up into our life situations, bringing transformational life. When patience rises up in us, it will push away any negatives. This is where we experience the freedom to learn and grow up in Christ in all things.
